How to Remove Stains From Carpet

How to Remove Stains from CarpetFor more than 25 years, Portland Chem-Dry has been helping residents remove stains from carpet and pride ourselves in being one of the best in carpet stain removal.  But for the quick fixes in between cleanings here is a step by step process on how to remove stains from your carpet without causing damage.

What you will need:

    • White cloth/paper towel
    • Club Soda
    • Heavy book(s)

Caution:  Be careful with what over-the-counter products you use on your carpet.  While many of these products may be able to remove the immediate stain, they can cause long term damage to the carpet.

Step by Step Process:

  1. Remove cause of stain (Soda, Cake, Dirt or whatever it may be)
  2. Pick 2 by 2 inch target area to start  (Start from the outside and work your way in)
  3. Apply two good tablespoons amount of club soda to targeted area
Caution: Too much club soda can cause moisture to soak into back padding creating perfect environment for bacteria and mold
  4. Blot target area with white towel
  5. Repeat step 3 and 4 until target area is stain free or no stain is transferring to towel
  6. Move to next target area and repeat steps 3 through 5 until entire stain has been cleaned
  7. Place completely dried towels over effected area and weight down with a book(s) to pull moisture out of carpet so it doesn’t soak through the back padding.

If nothing is transferring to white towel and stain still remains, it is likely the stain has chemically bonded to the carpet and it may be time to call the professionals.

This process will help you with most dirt and sugar-based stains.  When a stain is caused by something that contains a dye, it is very unlikely you will be able to remove it with club soda or any over the counter cleaner without causing damage to your carpet.  It is important to know what you are using on your carpet, as many over the counter products can leave sticky and harsh residues in your carpet, attracting dirt in the future and damaging the carpet fibers.

Chem-Dry Spot RemoverAnother excellent option is to try using our Chem-Dry World Famous Spot Remover. This is a completely safe and green product designed to remove dirt and sugar based stains without negative effects.

  1. Thank you for the practical critique. Me and my next-door neighbor were simply preparing to do a little research about this. We got a grab a book from our area library but I think I found out more clear from this post. I am really happy to see such excellent information being shared freely out there.
